Saying goodbye is the hardest part of loving an animal. For many families, a peaceful farewell at home feels kinder—no stressful car ride, no waiting room, just familiar smells, favourite blankets and everyone gathered close. This guide will help you decide whether home euthanasia is the right choice for you and your pet, and what to expect if you live in Manchester, Bolton or Bury.

What “home euthanasia” actually involves
At Dignity Vets, a gentle, three-step process helps your pet drift into a deep sleep before the final injection is given—calmly, pain-free, and unrushed in your own home. It begins with a conversation (in person or by phone), followed by tailored sedation, then the final goodbye when your pet is fully asleep.
You’re encouraged to choose a cosy spot—on the sofa, in the garden, wherever your pet feels safest. The focus is on dignity, comfort and compassion throughout.
How to decide if a home goodbye is right for you
Consider a home visit if any of the following feel true:
Your pet finds clinics stressful (noise, travel, other animals). A familiar setting can keep them calm.
Mobility or pain makes travel uncomfortable. Staying put avoids lifting, loading, and discomfort.
You want privacy and time. Home visits are unhurried and centred on your family’s needs.
You’d like siblings, children or other pets present for a gentle, supported goodbye.
Still unsure? Dignity Vets offers quality-of-life consultations (in-home or by video) based on the HHHHHMM scale to help you make an informed, compassionate decision.
Where we come to you (Greater Manchester, Bolton & Bury)
Dignity Vets provides at-home pet euthanasia across Manchester and the wider area—including Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Stockport, Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, parts of Cheshire and Lancashire—with transparent travel fees from our Ramsbottom base. If you’re unsure, just ask and we’ll confirm.
Aftercare & cremation: choices that feel right for you
When you’re ready, we can arrange respectful aftercare and cremation with trusted local partners so everything is seamless:
Individual cremation (ashes returned to you)
Communal cremation (ashes scattered in a garden of rest)
Certificate of cremation if you’d like reassurance without ashes returned
We coordinate everything on your behalf or connect you directly to the cremation team—whatever feels best for you.
Who will be with you on the day?
Dignity Vets is a family-run service led by Dr James Adams MRCVS (Emergency & Critical Care) and Faye Adams RVN (Head Veterinary Nurse with a special interest in anaesthesia). Their background means sedation is carefully tailored and comfort is prioritised at every step.
What it costs (and why it’s transparent)
Clear, upfront pricing helps you plan at a difficult time. As a guide, cat home euthanasia is £230, with dogs priced by weight (from £250 for 0–10 kg). There are out-of-hours and bank-holiday supplements if you need an evening, night or holiday visit.
When you can book
Seven days a week, by appointment. Same-day visits are often possible—please call or message to check current availability.
A simple checklist to help you choose
My pet is more relaxed at home than in a clinic
Travelling causes pain, anxiety or breathing difficulty
I want family members (and other pets) present
I’d appreciate an unhurried visit with time for goodbyes
I’m comfortable with a gentle sedation-first approach
I’ve thought about aftercare (individual or communal cremation) and what feels right
If most of these resonate, home euthanasia may be the kindest option for your pet and your family.
